Location, location, location. Other things should surely matter to you during your house hunt, such as (A) price, and (B) whether the house currently has a roof. But when you want the best location, you need look no further than Detroit Lakes, MN.

We feel sorry for Realtors who work in a market they wouldn’t love to live in. When the Action Realty of Detroit Lakes team shows a home, it’s necessarily situated in our favorite neighborhood. (That’s Detroit Lakes, MN, in case we’re being unclear.)

What’s it like to live in Detroit Lakes? It’s beautiful, for starters. The Creator outdid himself when he created Northwest Minnesota, and Colonel George Johnston was wise to found a town that is one-third pristine lake. It’s no wonder why Detroit Lakes becomes such a hotspot for tourism every summer.

Detroit Lakes: An Outdoorsman’s Paradise

And an outdoorswoman’s paradise too, to be sure! Detroit Lake is the sapphire in the City of Detroit Lakes’ crown – a crystal pure 3,067-acre expanse of water that you’ll love boating across, picnicking by, or fishing in. There are ample bass, pike and muskie, and of course the majestic walleye (Minnesota’s official state fish).

We would never suggest that growing weary of the lake is possible. But if you are in the mood for a change of scenery, perhaps one of Becker County’s other 411 lakes will do.

Thanks to Detroit Lakes’ many nearby state parks and forests, everyone who lives here has the prettiest backyard in the country. Nature lovers love escaping to Maplewood State Park, Buffalo River State Park, Itasca State Park, and Tamarac and Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuges.

But the finest exploring is to be had right here in town. Go to Sucker Creek Preserve to get lost in over 60 acres of maple-basswood forest, where you can fish for trout, encounter over 250 species of wild birds, or just walk the trails with your faithful pooch companion.

Detroit Lakes Is A Sportsman’s Dream

And a sportswoman’s dream too, to be sure! Detroit Mountain Recreation Area wears two hats as Northwest Minnesota’s best destination for winter skiing and summer mountain biking. You can easily get around Detroit Lakes via snowmobile. Indeed, all of Becker County is practically one big snowmobile trail.

Golf? Oh goodness, yes! We have Detroit Country Club, Forest Hills Resort and Wildflower Golf Course all right here in town, as well as Maple Hills Golf Club and the aptly named Frazee Golf Course in neighboring Frazee. If you prefer going for a walk without spoiling it by playing golf, you can spend plenty of time meandering North Country National Scenic Trail which stretches over 4,600 miles.

We Have The Best of the Fests

Detroit Lakes wouldn’t be a very good Smalltown, America if it didn’t offer a healthy variety of festivals. We hold the Festival of Birds every May to entertain all the “bird nerds” who flock to our area to admire its abundant feathered wildlife. We celebrate Polar Fest every February where we fly kites, play ice tee golf, and compete in the Poles ‘N Holes Fishing Derby. JJ’s Hog Roast for Hospice treats us to live music, classic cars and mouth watering barbecue every August.

Last but not least is the Becker County Fair, which outclasses the Minnesota State Fair in every imaginable way because it is held in Detroit Lakes instead of Falcon Heights.

Detroit Lakes Has Better Food Than Paris, Probably

Detroit Lakes is home to dozens of fine eating and/or drinking establishments. We’ve got the Dairy Queen that all small Minnesotan towns are required to have by law and four (count ’em) takeout pizza places.

Our city offers plenty of options when you’re in the mood for slightly finer dining. There’s The Fireside, a chic lakeside steakhouse with patio seating; Zorbaz at the Beach, which satisfies lovers of Mexican and Italian cuisine without requiring either to compromise; and Lakeside Tavern & Brewery, which serves beer so good that it that defies our powers of description.

We’re A Destination for Arts, Culture and Shopping

What better way to celebrate another great day of snowmobiling or walleye fishing than by attending a live performance at the Historic Holmes Theatre, our grand remodeled auditorium in the heart of downtown? Culture lovers also adore the free live music at the City Park bandshell, the rousing performances given during Shakespeare in the Park, and the riveting annual White Earth Powwow.

Are you more of a shopaholic? No need to confess. We’ll just know to look for you at Washington Square Mall, the Shady Hollow Flea Market, or one of our many cute and locally owned boutiques.

We Have Employers Aplenty

Detroit Lakes and the surrounding Becker County area enjoy a healthy local economy courtesy of the hundreds of businesses which call them home. Major employers in the healthcare, retail and manufacturing industries all contribute to our county’s low 2.3 percent unemployment rate (as of June, 2022).

But if you’ve sought enough employment for one lifetime, then you’ll be in good company here in Detroit Lakes. Retirees can enjoy our surfeit of entertainment and natural beauty 24/7, all year long.
