The heart of the lakes. If you would like to experience Minnesota living at its finest – all year long, or just seasonally – then you’ll find no better pocket of paradise than Detroit Lakes. We’ve got all the charm and character of smalltown America. We’ve got more lakes than an avid outdoorsman could possibly figure out what to do with. And perhaps best of all, we’ve got lots of available lake homes that anyone would love to feather a nest in.
Let’s take a look at some of the Detroit Lakes area’s most thrilling neighborhoods!
Floyd Lake
If you’re looking for a lakefront home and aren’t laser-focused on living in Detroit Lakes, just look a little farther north to Detroit Township. There lies Floyd Lake (and its little brother, Little Floyd Lake, just to the east). These bodies of water, which are rimmed with beautiful houses, are both anglers’ paradises: brimming with bass, walleye, crappie, and other fish Minnesotans love breading and frying and doing other wonderful things to. Once you’ve caught your catch for the day, celebrate with a pint at the Crawford family’s Sunlite Bar & Grill!
Brandy Lake
While it may not be as large or as deep as nearby Floyd Lake, Brandy Lake is no less picturesque. Though located near several amenities including Walmart, Menards and Detroit Lakes Becker County Airport, the Brandy Lake neighborhood is protected against too much overdevelopment by the Lake Waterfowl Production Area just northwest of the shore.
Downtown
It’s not exactly Manhattan, but downtown Detroit Lakes still packs oodles of culture into a fairly compact area. Our downtown has put Becker County on the map thanks to the Historic Holmes Theatre, the City Park bandshell, and big annual White Earth Treaty Celebration & Pow Wow. And if you’re less about culture and more about shopping, then you’ll find endless hours of entertainment at the Washington Square Mall and Shady Hollow Flea Market.
Detroit Lake
Of course, nothing downtown offers can compare to the natural splendor of the lake. At 3067 acres, Detroit Lake is large enough to host all of Minnesota’s legendary game fish: muskie, pike, bluegill, and the all-important walleye. Though developed to the point where nearly all of its shoreline is dotted with smart houses, Detroit Lake is still easy to access by boat. If you prefer to admire scenery over the salted rim of a margarita glass, then you’ll find plenty of charming lakeside bars and restaurants around the Detroit Lakes area’s star attraction!
Lake Sallie
Just southwest of Detroit Lake sits another sapphire-blue elysium: Lake Sallie, which is right near Lake Melissa to the south and Fox Lake to the west. (Mud Lake, a decidedly less attractively named body of water, is in those lakes’ vicinity as well. Living in this area puts you just 10 minutes away from all the sights and sounds of Detroit Lakes proper, but also surrounds you with plenty of natural beauty and rolling farmland. When you’re not enjoying cozy winter living, you’ll be able to pop over to Detroit Country Club: 36 holes that offer a rewarding challenge to pros and duffers alike!
Pelican Lake
Drive a little farther southwest on U.S. 59 and you’ll discover Pelican Lake – a spot so popular for fishing, swimming and boating that it is surrounded by multiple resorts. Pelican Lake is attached to Fish Lake and Bass Lake (both aptly named bodies of water), which makes life there a true angler’s dream. And when water doesn’t factor into your plan for the day, you’ll find plenty of nearby opportunities for hiking, hunting and camping!
